How to Apply for SESCO NEM Solar in Sarawak

The paperwork, the steps, and what to expect.

You’ve run the numbers on our calculators, you like what you see, and you’re ready to pull the trigger. But then you think: “Oh no, now I have to deal with SESCO applications.”

We get it. Dealing with any utility board can feel like trying to solve a giant maze. The good news is that you don’t actually have to do the paperwork yourself. By SESCO’s rules, your installation must be managed and submitted by an officially registered solar contractor.

Even though your installer does the heavy lifting, it helps to understand the journey. Here is the straightforward 4-step process to getting your rooftop solar activated:

1.Choose an Approved Installer & Submit Documents:Takes about 1–2 weeks.

Your installer will check your roof structure, evaluate your last 12 months of SESCO bills, and request your document bundle (usually just a copy of your MyKad and your land title/proof of house ownership).

2.SESCO Technical Review & Subsidy Lock:Takes about 3–6 weeks.

Your contractor submits your solar design blueprints to SESCO’s grid engineering team. This is when SESCO officially approves your system, verifies your eligibility, and locks in your RM8k to RM12k subsidy slot so the funds are secured for you.

3.Physical Rooftop Installation:Takes 1–2 days.

Once SESCO gives the green light, the installation team arrives. In almost all cases, mounting the frames, laying the panels, and wiring the inverter takes just 24 to 48 hours.

4.The Smart Meter Swap & Power On:Takes about 1–2 weeks after install.

SESCO technicians visit your home to inspect the wiring and swap out your old electrical meter for a brand new, bidirectional NEM Smart Meter. Once connected, they flip the switch, and your house officially starts earning solar credits!
